Media Through The Eyes Of The Young

Being A University Student.

This is a platform that I have been using for a university, this is something I also did in A-level, as a media student to run a blog is something you are expected to do .. I am also supposed to have all my lectures on here… That’s my summer homework 🙂

With a blog, I have more freedom to show my opinion as well as use it as a way to attract potential jobs or volunteering, internships etc. I work for the University paper so am able to show my articles on here as well as on the papers’ websites because the more places your work is on the more people who will see it.

A website is something that can be made easily and a way to create your brand and promote it in any way.

I created mine:

Snip20170608_26

You are going to create a brand and try to market it there are hundreds of ways video, posters, leaflets, presentation etc.

Media Log Part Three: Evaluation

This evaluation of the 72hr log will be my way to incorporate the theories learned in lessons into my results and look into the deeper reasons for the ways I interacted with the media on a daily basis. I am going to be looking into three theories and ideas that I believe link to my personal usage style.

The first theory that I feel is linked to my personal usage is Uses and gratifications, by McQuail (1969). The main points of the theory are:

  • Surveillance – knowledge of the world around us.
  • Personal identity – use in developing and expressing identity
  • Personal relationships – use in building and sustaining relationships
  • Diversion – escapism, fantasy, pleasure etc. (2)

I believe that my usage when relating it to this theory my main use of media is Surveillance, this is shown with the need to scroll through social media outlets such as Instagram. The social pressure to look good and document all forms of our lives online and to get recognition with the need to receive likes on images is something my generation is programmed to do. Although I wish that this was not the reality I cannot say I have not posted something to get some form of recognition. This idea could also link to personal identity with our need for likes views and comment feeling as ways that my generation have used to develop our personality with what we view and comment on. In all truths, my usage for Tumblr is only to see and interact with people’s reactions to anime and books I read/watch.

When finding a weakness some people may see what I find as a weakness a strength but the key weakness, in my opinion, is that all four reasons could be used in all interactions an example of this is my usage of the app Wattpad before I sleep. I am surveilling as I am looking at the reactions of others to a book, I am also developing my personal identity within the app by commenting and reacting to new releases and finally, the app allows for me to improve personal relationships with people from all corners of the world, and the most important aspect of the app is a way of escapism into another world. Many may say that although the method could have all the points used in a study you have to view what is the most important reason.

Usage and consumption of media are something that as a person born in the age of social media is something that is not shocking, as Gauntlett and Hill stated we are the creature of habit and this is something that I have already stated when looking at my log. “Most people did have a mentally timetabled routine. Even those whose day did not have to start at a specific time, or who had avoided the rigidity of ‘5.20: Make cheese on toast, 5.35: Watch Neighbours’, still had a clear idea of how long particular activities should take, and approximately when they should occur.” (Gauntlett and Hill 1999: 284) I am that creature of habit here is the examples:

snip20170226_4snip20170226_6snip20170226_5

When looking at the data collected I notice that I go on the same three to four apps before leaving the bed and spend an hour doing so, it shows that social media has a key role in my life because I feel the need to stay informed. This, however, is not something bad as someone who writes for the university I find that if I do not know what is occurring in the world I am not able to report what is happening. Unfortunately to those who state that we do not need social media I have to politely disagree because in some cases it is the way that my generation connects and finds out information. This is done by reading the Daily Mail on Snapchat or looking at what is trending on Facebook and what hashtag is going around Twitter.

Overall, when looking at the data I collected and connecting it to theories if I was to do this again I would conduct the experiment during a seven-day period. Although I may once again hate the sight of tables but it is a risk I am gonna have to be willing face to get a clear and wider representation of my media usage. Another thing I would do and state before doing this again is that as a person whose media is linked to my emotions my log will always depend if I wish to be connected to the world or want to be isolated and hibernate for two days. Our media usage is and will always be developing and evolving, daily, weekly and yearly. This log will be something that I may reuse later on in life to see how my interactions have changed and to see if my anime addition followed me to my twenties.

Media Log Part 2: Findings

72 hours have been done and mastered and I am not tired of seeing the table, and I did not become a little crazy for highlighting every minute of the day… for three days … continually, I hope you can hear the sarcasm in my voice as I type this.

In all seriousness, I found that by conducting the study on days that I do not have lessons and am not forced to wake up at  nine am,  I am a stereotypical teenager spending every morning  for at least an hour, going on the same apps to look at notifications and see what my classmates back home have been doing whilst I slept. A challenge that I had found whilst conducted the study was as I had guessed, continuity was a problem as there are times where I would forget to write down an interaction and would spend the night trying to remember what I did in that hour. However, an issue I did not predict was the time it took to type out each interaction onto the word document and looking back I would have tried to block my usage hourly.

My findings whilst conducting the 72-hour log showed that I did not spend large chunks of the day online,  I believe the main reasoning could be that whilst not being forced into doing work I do not tend to procrastinate with my time. I could see that I spent the large portion of my time on music streaming as well as scrolling through social media. On Friday I was assigned my articles for the newspaper so I spent some time doing research on the topic I was given. Another finding is that on days I do not have university I spent a large amount of time on my own within the accommodation and I found this worrying, but then remembered that this is only for that specific week and I actually spend a large amount of time with family and course mate, as well as flatmates, and although this is true I began planning outings and ways to interact more with people during times that I am not required to be in university.

If asked if I found my results shocking I would reply that with no I did not find my end results shocking; this is not because I knew I was a TV addict/book addict. With the usage of apps such as TV Show Time, I am able to regulate how much time I spend watching anime, tv dramas and shows daily. I know that this is because  I know that I am a creature of habit, someone who enjoy a form of structure and mental stimulation through entertainment and shows.

The only shocking element out of this experience is that I had expected to have more online interactions but I had actually only spent small amounts of time online. I, however, do know that this is not a truthful representation of my daily life. I think this because we all know that when conducting a study and knowing that you are the key subject can and will alter your behaviour in one way or another because you may want to show a better side of yourself when your life is written on a spreadsheet. I feel that I did this unconditionally, let’s just say that I don’t actually go to sleep at 9;58/10:30 pm every day, but I felt like I should go to sleep early because I am a good person you know being healthy and everything… Or I went to sleep early because I just couldn’t be asked to continue logging, you will never know. I just know that doing a 72hr log has made me never want to see another word table as long as I live.

Media Audience Log Post 1: What I expect to happen and how I will conduct this research.

Entry one preparing for conducting your log:

Media to me has always been seen as a form of escapism through the use of reading apps such as Wattpad, Radish as well as Amazon kindle app on my phone. When growing up in the twenty-first century we are accustomed and programmed, to be attached to some form of media or electronic device, if not people begin to question your wealth and other aspects of your life. We no longer use traditional ways, such as awards and other forms of praise to show merits but have become dependent on ensuring that we have more, views, likes, friends and followers on social media platforms.

When conducting the trial run of the log, I saw that whilst performing the 24hr trial my usage and consumptions of media depended heavily on my emotions, this is shown on the 24hr log where I was ill and in turn spent most of the day reading the paperback edition of my favourite novel and eating soup.

My only ways to access media whilst at university are my phone and laptop, so if I have to deal with what I am going to be using, it does not seem to hard. I say this after doing the trial 24 hours where I only used my phone and laptop for six hours and spent the rest of the day sleeping, but I know I can do it…

In all serious when conducting the trial, I saw that I could not write and log my usage on the log document at the same time, this is because I felt that it was not a clear repetition and it demanded that I used my laptop at periods of time I would not usually use it at. So when conducting the 72-hour log I have printed out the template and will be noting down my usage as the day progresses.  When looking at advertising and mobile phone usage I plan to only focus on an advertisement that has gained my attention and is not part of background noise. How I will choose between this is by trying to see what advertisement had a lasting effect and that I was not able to skip over or have ad block evoked. The app on phones is not something I see as an issue as I will ensure not to close an app on my phone so that If I do forget to log an interaction I can see what app had been opened and used on the day. To ensure there is no false data I will wipe the tab draw before I go to sleep each day.

A key challenge is making sure that I do this study continuously without fail and noticing when media is being used. When finishing this trial, I hope to find that I spend my time wisely and do not procrastinate as much as I am stereotyped to do as a teen.

So with no further wait, I give you my 72hr log… I hope I don’t sleep the whole way, through.

My top 5 films coming in 2017 ( Published On Hnews)

1. Dunkirk

Youtube Trailer

dunkirkThis historical adaptation of the book and 1958 film of the same name is one of the 2017 films to watch out for. With a storyline that shows the real emotions and events of the people involved in the near disastrous World War 2 event that almost saw Britain removed from the war before the fighting even got started. By looking at the psychological struggles of the men’s in the war it shows the gravity of what they were fighting for.
The film is also One Direction’s Harry Styles first try at working in Hollywood and many fans can’t wait to see if it is as good as critics are stating it is.

Dear White People….Are you offended or Open-minded?

Dear White People.

Are you offended with my polite introduction to my opinion on your reaction to the new Netflix remake of the 2014 movie “Dear White People”? If you are then here are my reason for thinking your acting like an entitled piece of shit.

Reason one, your opinion is based on a 35-second trailer. If you think that 35 second is enough time to judge something, then you must have some sort of super powers to know what will occur in the ten episodes that have yet to be aired. Many may argue that the trailer was horrendous and in turn, the show should not be created because it was not to their taste and your super power has informed you it is horrible.  Unfortunately, your white powers mean nothing to me. I, however, do believe that the trailer is in some way distasteful as it does not portray the real meaning of the show which is about BLACK PEOPLES lives in university and how they feel to either rebel or conform to the ways of their fellow white students.

Reason two, it has nothing to do with you. So there is no need to be like, maybe we should make a show called Dear Black people…  see how you like it. Well sorry to inform you that this has already been made it called “Blackish” and it is amazing! The use of “Dear” may have made you feel that it’s a letter you must read, but do you really need to read it? Think of it as a tax or a bill for a service your using that you never open so you are intern oblivious to what the letter entails, if you have open the letter addressed to you the, unfortunately, you have to keep reading before you decided that this letter addressed to you has offended your pride and is a hate letter to you culture and society. For all, you know it may be a love letter starting out sour like a sour ball and turning into a sweet and well-formed centre.

Reason three the final reason is YOU HAVENT SEEN THE SHOW YET! It not out yet to be judged and when it is out I will write a review on how it was done. If you have cancelled your account because of it  I would also like to point out … it’s not the only show available on the god damn platform if you want recommendations there are other original shows such as Fuller House, Sense 8 and Stranger things. You have the ability to just not watch it.

To end this love letter from me to you here is a piece of information to broaden your thoughts. We have become a generation that has become intuited and feel that our opinions mean the world if we don’t like something we block, boycott and protest an idea. although half the time we do not have a full grasp of what an idea or a piece of work is trying to portray only looking at sections which we automatically find offensive and become graded about our opinions are then not fully formed arguments. This is true when looking at the reaction to dear white people.

So Dear White People, are you offended or open-minded?

Media Audience (L2)

Research how we connect with the material given to us by media

It gives a sense of community or a collective. We watch things live as it is something to be done as a way to interlink.

We have value judgement, are we learning from what we are watching.

for example my addiction to anime

‘Checking in’ (from Bertel 2014)

  • ‘I think sometimes it is ridiculous because people have begun to check in [at] ‘lying in my wonderful bed’. Yeah, like anyone asked you! I am too, for God’s sake! Am I supposed to tell you like when I am lying . . . when I am in … .Am I supposed to tell you when I am taking a crap? [laughs]. Like ‘In the toilet taking a crap’. Checking in at the toilet. It is ridiculous and doesn’t make sense to check in all the time’.

‘I have seen it on Facebook when people post it. ‘Then I am here’ and ‘then I am there’ and I think that is so silly! I don’t want to know where people are. And why would you want to know? If I wanted to know and if the person wanted me to know

This Meme can be seen as a way to show people that although we are constantly telling each other what we are doing in everyday lives it still doesn’t mean that it is not something we all want to know.
